TheLadders.com, the job site for positions in the $100K per year range, ran an interesting experiment. They placed $100,000 in a glass box and left it out in public to see the response. Hidden cameras captured what unfolded.
The idea behind their experiment (and their commercials) is that $100K draws quite a crowd. The problem with large crowds is that it obscures the ability of companies from finding the right type of employee and qualified employees from finding the right type of job. Viewing basic listings at TheLadders.com is free, though you will have to pay a nominal fee to see full job descriptions or apply for listed positions. The costs may not be worth it to a casual job seeker, but almost certainly are to anyone actively seeking work with a salary in that range.

They could have put $1000 in the box and it still would have attracted a lot of gawkers. No control, no experiment.

@paidtwice,
Very true. Of course, $1000 wouldn’t play into their marketing as $100K is their magic number. I wonder how different amounts would effect interest in the box. I can’t imagine the guy with the sledgehammer coming if there had been ten bucks in the box.
